The building belonged to an English joiner and his Jewish wife. They allowed the upper floor of their shop to be used as a synagogue.
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries there was a small community of Jewish families in York who worked in a variety of jobs as tailors, hoteliers and solicitors.
The synagogue was used regularly for high holiday services until 1975.
